AMUSEMENTS.
HEWITT'S PICTURES. has submitted some good programmes to New Plymouth audi•encefi during the time he has been lien, but it is doubtful if any has equalled that given last evening. The one picture, "Joan of Are," was worth the entrance fee in itself. It is undoubtedly a fine picture, as realistic as it is interesting, and gives one an insight into the character of France's great patriot and martyr that no reading or descrip-1 tion could give. Another interesting I and instructive film was that of the in- j ternational balloon contest held this year in England. The pictures were ex-1 ceedingly plain, every face being recognisable, and one felt as if one were realiy present and taking a "fly" in the balloon for the cinematographic man mu6t have been aboard one of the balloons, as several views were "given of London and its environs from many hundred feet above the »ivnt metropolis. The making of the monster 12in guns that adorn the Dreadnoughts was depicted in a lons film. Evcry%laee of the manufacture" of the steel "baiiies" was shown—from -flip the inKrffe from which the steel for thVsnins' is.-made to the completed article undergoing its initial severe teste. There were other good pictures. "The lut juggler"—showing the juggling feats of a. past-master in the art—being one of tli" most striking. Mr. Hewitt submits the same programme this evening, and it will be their own loss if the public do not roll up to see what we can unhcfiitalinirly declare is one of the most intcresthf" and enjoyable programmes ever put on In the town.
