AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL.
SECOND DAY. SAM JOHNSOITwiNS THE BIG MONEY. Tlie Axemen's Carnival was continued yesterday under most favorable conditions. The weather, which looked very doubtful early in the morning, cleared beautifully, and as a res'ult there was a very good attendance. The takings, £B7, were a record for a second day, being £-20 over last year's, and with the amount taken yesterday, viz., £154, brings the total gate-money to £241, which is £lo better than the previous best, showing that the public appreciate the efforts of the Axemen s Association in so ably catering for their amusement.
ilio events yesterday were well contested, the most successful competitor being Sam Johnson, of Gisborne, who won the big chop of ~€lOO, the underhand chop, was second in the championship of Now Zealand, and fourth ill the visitors' chop. His wins were all deservedly popular, a* .vere also lisau Pretty's ill the 12-incli iMampiouship of New Zealand and the visitors' handicap. Tlie champion, 1JPretty, was rather unfortunate in his ■ blocks. The cycling was well contested. The officials all worked well, and were particularly keen in keeping the ring clear of all but actual competitors, officials, and pressmen, a fact which was very much appreciated by the public. The various booths and sideshows appeared to do good business. The Eltliam Bra-ss Band rendered a fine programme of music, which greatly added to the day's enjoyment. Results:—
