RACECOURSE IMPROVEMENTS

O". first day of the local race meeting, and prior to the commencement of the day's sport, and when the stewards were gathered togther in the new stand, the president took the opportunity of congratulating the club on the many improvements that were ill evidence around them. The stewards I and the officials had to thank the committee most sincerely for the care and attention they had given to all the deI tails, which would make the work of future meetings so much easier than formerly. He hoped the racing they would see from time to time would be as clean and wholesome as the surroundings which the dub had now provided for the conduct of the meetings. Mr. Newman announced the receipt of an apology from the Mayor (Mr. Tisch) who wrote: "I regret that an important engagement at the electric light works prevents my being with voii to-day on the occasion of the opening of the club's new stewards' stand. I cannot, however, allow such an event to pass without congratulating the club on its progressive policy" and which marks another important chapter in the club's history. The success of the club is in a great measure due to the committee and officials, who have always worked hard to popularise the national and noble sport of horseracing for amusement, and not for money-making. Some of you present to-day will remember the modest structure that stood on the north side of the course, and which did duty for many years as a grandstand, while today the club possesses a grandstand, stewards' stand, and accommodation for the public that are not only a credit to the club but are a great' and valuable asset to New Plymouth, and one that any town may well feel proud of. I trust you will have a successful meeting, and wish the club continued prosperity."
