FIRST DAY.

The Christmas meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club opened .yesterday in ■ beautiful weather. The course was in splendid condition and the new lawns and appointments were looking at their best. At the six furlong post the order was Timothy, Silva, Shannon La6s, but Silva took chnrge shortly after. At the bottom of the bark stretch, lady Menschikoff joined issue with the leaders and was quickly in front, leading into the straight. It looked all over, till Bismarck was se-:i coming with a terrific rush on the outside, and he quickly established a clear lead, winning handsomely by two lengths, Shannon Lass a length awav.
