The Kev. 11. (.). Townsend Hanby went to Wellington for a couple of days oy the express thfe morning, Mr. l'\ P. Corkill, Provincial Grand Master, has received intimation that His Excellency Lord Plunkct, the Grand Master, will not be able to attend the Masonic function at Eltham to-Tiight.
English papers to hand record the death of the Provost of Eton, the Kev. •lames John Hornby, D.D., IJ.C.L, from heart failure, at his residence, Tin Lodge, Klon College, at Hie advanced age of Si Dr. Hornby was born at Winwick on December 18, 182U, and was the third son of Admiral Sir Phipps Hornby. K.C.1!., and Maria, daughter of the Right Hon. Sir John Burgoyne. He
was thought by many to be one of the best speakers in England. He had a voice like a silver bell. One of the last public gatherings he attended was a meeting in Election Hall on behalf of the Zululand Mission. The King had a high opinion of the venerable provost, who was one of his Majesty's' chaplains. He rowed in the Oxford University eights of 18-10 and 1851, and played in the Eton cricket eleven of 184.). He was interested in all sports, lie returned to Eton as headmaster in IBl>B, becoming provost in 1884. j
