PERSONAL.

A Ijondon cable reports the death of Lord Monkswcll, in his sixty-fourth year. He was a member of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, UnderSecretary for War in 1895, and was well known as a writer on diverse subjects. The death is reported ot Merino Downs' Farm, Rcdclill', Otago, of Mr. J. M. McNeill, in his seventy-eighth year. Mr. McNeill managed the Merino Downs portion of the Waikakahi Estate for the late Mr. Allan McLean, and had been settled in the district for over thirty years. Mr. J. B. Robertson, of Okato, and .formerly of Hawera, died as the result of an operation at New Plymouth yesterday. Mr. Robertson was a wellknown settler, particularly in South Taranaki, and was held in the highest esteem. The interment takes place at Hawcra this afternoon.

The Rev. 11. O. T. Hanby, curate at St. Mary's for the past year, has been appointed to the charge of the newiyformeii Taumarunui Home Mission district. Mr. Hanby, who leaves early in January, has made many friends during his brief sojourn here, and they will be pleased to hear of his advancement.

News has been received at Dunedin of the death at Hove, Sussex, of Mr, Edmund Peel Kenyou, for many years a respected legal practitioner in that city. Mr. Kcnyon was an English solicitor when he arrived in Auckland half a century ago, and as such was entitled to be admitted to the Bar in New Zealand, and, going BOuth to Otago in the early days of the settlement, he commenced the practice of his profession in Dunedin in ISC'I in partnership with Mr. Rawlins.

Madame Melba lias now taken up her residence at Maccdon (Victoria), where she will remain until her departure for Europe. She has listened to all the young singer* she promised to hear, and, while many of these students showed considerable vocal promise, the one that most appealed to Madame Melba on the general grounds of voice, technique, intelligence temperament, and industry, is a young Tusmanian soprano, Miss Lucy Atkins, who will accompany the emiuent singer to Europe,
