On Wednesday morning a new ferry boat, named the Pupuke, was launched at Auckland for the Takapuna Tramways and Ferry Company. She ia to liave a speed of eleven knots, her dimensions being: —Length, 100 ft; „':dth of upper deck, 28ft j beam of hull, 21H. ! She "Ims commodious cabins, nicely furnished, and there is ample Jerk space and seating accommodation. The hull is built of the beet heart of kauri, sheathed with totara below the waterline. In every ru*peet she is an up-to-date vessel, being fiiioj with every convenience, while the electric light is installed throughout. The engines are of the compound surface-condensing type, an.l highly finished. The indicated horsepower is 200 and the working pressure of the boilers is 1301b. A steam steering gear is attached to the engines, and there arc also air and circulating pumps, which will give the engine freedom, and full vacuum, thus ensuring | full power being developed on starting. It is expected that the vessel will be in : commission by Christmas. i COST or 1 A COLLISION.
Some figures may now be given (writes a London correspondent} iniifthe payments to be made by owners and underwriters of the X-.'\v Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Whakatane on account of the collision ■between that vessel and the l-'rem-a steamer Circe in the English Channel last July. Including in the award of the s.iivagers { £0000), the general average expenses have been estimated at .€14.500. Of this amount £4040 is charged to li e contributory value of the Whakatane ( £40,000), and £10,400 to the contributory value of her cargo { €101,000). Repairs to the hull and machinery of the Whakatane were estimated at £7OOO, insulation repairs at £2300. and the lose of bunker coal at £2OOO. making a total .of £11,300. A provisional settlement of £8.">00 is being made on account of repairs to Die ship, allowing for the proportion of the Circes contribution allotted to coals ( £2000) and adding the s»ipV> share of general average expenses, a settlement of €12.540 is reached. A provisional payni'nt of 20 per cent, of the WhakataneV insured value of €54.000 is beuijj made by underwriters, amounting to €IO.BOO.
