(i'roiu Our Uwn Correspondents.) WAltliA. p The light rains Unit fell during the week were very welcome, doing a great deal of good. , A meeting of the Cape Eguiont Horticultural Society was Jield iu the hall on Wednesday night alter tne concert, Mr. J. Burgess presiding. Some di;cussion took place over tne refreshment booth on the day of the show, and liaally the ladies formed themselves imo a committee, with power to add to their number, to look after this department. The committee consists 01 jiesuames .Millar, |Larking, Itodgers, Corbett, I. Julian, Clarke, judge, and Jliss i\. Cor"bett. The selection of judges for the various classes was held over for the next meeting. A cricket match, Okato v. Warea, was played on our local grounds on j in glorious weather. The , scoring on the visitors' side was very good, the highest being put up by Mr. T. Corbett, who made 2!) runs. Our local teams seem as if they cannot play cricket tliis year, for they have not done any good this season. This is accounted for by not having enough practice, and another thing, several of tie best'players are out of the team this year. The' highest score was put up by VV. 0. Corbett, who made !) runs. The game ended in a win for Okato by 47 runs to -'J runs. The following are the scores:—Okato.—J. Carey, b Anderson, U; I'. Corbett, b VVarburton, 21); C. Andrews, b VVarburton, 3; L. A new departure was made at Omata on Friday in the matter of prize-giving Hitherto it -has been the custom to give the children their prizes in the schoolroom on breaking-up day, but the headmaster. Mr. Mcycnberg, this year decided to give the children a double pleas- | ure by presenting the prizes in the presence of their parents, and, linding the evening to be the most convenient time for the elders, he lixed S p.m. oil Friday at the Omata Hull /or the distribution. The crowded -hall was sufficient evidence that his -plan was' approved of. Mr. E. Uayley, chairman of the school committee, acted as chairman, and in a few well-chosen words opened the proceedings, informing the audiene'e that the prizes lmd been bought with the money raised by the late concert, the whole ol which (considerably over i)o) had gone to purchase the books to be presented. In addition Miss O'Brian had given four book prizes to her class and Mr. Meyenberg four cash prizes to his. They had met to pas's a social evening and see t lie iiappy faces before liim made happier still. To the successful -he would say, '•Don't be down-hearted, but try again. What one boy or girl had done another could do if only tliey tried hard enough and long enough.

Mrs. & -Hooker and Mr. i'earson were the first on the programme and played a piano duet with their usual skill and brilliancy. Needless to say ,they were heartily applauded, as, indeed, were all who so kindly assisted to make the gathering a pleasant one. The vocalists were Misses Butler and C. Mace, ltev. Butler and Mr. Meyenberg. Mr. Taylor gave a recitation and Mr. Williamson various items ou his phonograph. Between each item came the prize-giving, t'he were made by Mr. C. Buyh-y, and were:—A gift of a book to very child in the primer classes and three prizes to each standard; also attendance -prizes, good conduct prizes anil the special prizes given by the teachers'. Stewart Duke was dux of the school; Cyril Jury had made full attendances and ten others -had not been absent more than five days during the year. Mr. Meyenberg gave a short address and thanked the parents for their attendance and for their help to 'Himself since taking charge of the school. To the children he gave some kindly and sound advice and to all he gave best wishes for a happy Christinas and bright and prosperous New Year. At the close ot the evening II r. Bayley thanked the Hall Committee for allowing them the use of the hall free of cost. Mrs. J. C. iloueyfielil has been laid up since Monday last suffering from the. effects of a fall from her horse, i am glad to say she is oil the mend.

Mr. C. Iloneylielil met with an accident while driving to town on Saturday. It appears that his horse tripped, and he and Mrs. iloneyflcld, who was with him, were thrown out, but 1 am .pleased to say that, with the exception of a severe shaking, they were not otherwise injured. Mrs. N. Julian, who has been laid up for some days, has recovered and in about again.

Mrs. B, O'Dowda. is much better and hopes soon be able to return home. Mr. C. Oliver has 'been under the doctor for the last week or two, suffering from an old complaint. Haymaking has commenced, and the hum of the reaper can be heard continuously. A considerable amount of ground is' being suwu in turnips for winter use.

There is onu circumstance with tne prize-giving on Friday night that I regret to have to mention; that is that none of the gentlemen present thought , of calling'for a vote of thanks for Mr. Meyenberg and Miss O'Brien for the great amount of trouble tliey had taken in procuring funds for the prizes, and they also allowed the chairman to vacate the chair without the usual thanks for the able manner iu which he hud filled it. Sliull we put it down to want of thought or bashfulness! , LKl'l'KilTOJv 1 . (I'roni a Correspondent.) During the interval the young folk were presented with their prizes. This ceremony over, a "big hfty," Ml'. A- flrq\yp, was t|(c happy recipient of a very JU'iitty jnliitiijiil from his scholars as a mark of esteem, the presentation being jnado by Master A. Little 1111 behalf of his schoolmates. Great credit is due to tho ladies' committee for the bountiful supper and the manner in which they attended to the little ones. As usual with such affairs, Mr. and .Mrs. Merrin were well to the fore both -before and after tlie entertainment. The committee wish to csprijss their obligation to those perjin'iu,cfi; wI)Q came from Waitara on such a disagreeabte pvpning.
