The annual prize-giving and breakiugup ceremony ot the West End School was held yesterday afternoon. There was a large attendance of parents and friends and the function was an interesting one. Mr. H. J. Gilbert, chairman of the West End School Committee, oresided, and addressed the children, advising those, tliat were about to leave the srtiool to.ever remember the good teaching that had been given them, and to be honest and industrious men and women. During the distribution of prizes several vocal items were given by the children. The school will break up for the mid-summer holidays this afternoon, when the youngsters will be treated to lollies and nuts. .. . THE ANNUAL REPORT. Mrs.. Dowling, in her annual report of the year's work, stated that the this year had been awarded, as in pant years, for attendance, merit, sewing, and a few special ones for special neip and work. Every child in the infant room had been awarded a prize. The committee always made a special point of giving attendance prizes, as it was considered that any child whose attendance was irregular could not make a iirgt-class scholar. Every child should be taught that duty came before pleasure. Although it sometimes happened that there were unavoidable absentees through sickness, the teachers recognised that regular attendance had a go.jd moral effect on the school and should receive every encouragement. To cni courage regularity and* punctuality the" committee had decided that during the coming year the conditions for gaining a full attendance prize should be (a) that the child should attend every time tr.e school is open; (b) that he must never be late; (c) that he must not leave (uu less under very exceptional circumstances) before the time of closing, and that good attendance will be given ior those who miss not more than five times. This year a first-class prize and certificate had be'.ii awarded to those who made full attendance; a secondclass prize and certificate to those who I had not missed five times, and a prue only to those who had not missed ten I times. This year tnere had been an increase in the number of good-attend-ers. Last year 113 received prizes, hut this year there were 120 awards} The merit prizes in each class had been made to the boys and girls who had made the best marks by taking an average of the term examinations. In the early part of the year classes of hoys and girls had been taught swimming at the baths, and certificates had been gained by 15 girls and 20 boys. Woodwork anl cookery classes had also been taken (it the Technical School, Frank Sheppard gaining n lirst-class certificate for wood, work and draw in?, and a like award for collection of naTive woods. The el-iS'S firing of the cadets had resulted in 1 ii il loliiisoii winning the belt for the third year In succession. The boys had also' yjouMhe Rugbv football shield. In StaJjifc>Vl. 23 pupils out of 31 had certificates, while four hadTJaincd competency certificates. Several changes hail taken place in the teaching staff. Miss Potts and Mr. Meyonberg had gained promotion, the former to the head-teachership of the Bell Block school. Mr. Meyenbcrg was now head teacher at Omata. Mrs. Dowling thanked the staff for their careful attention to dutv. remarking that the head teacher's duties were made easier when the stall" all pulled together. The work of Hiss Myuott with the infant class had been very trying, but that lady was deserving of a word of special praise for her care of the little ones. In conclusion, Mrs. Dowling thanked the committee for their prompt attention to all matters brought under their notice, and also thanked the parents for the interest evinced in the welfare of the school.
