Tlie country reports destructive Irtish fires in all directions, being especially bad in the Blue Mountains and the south coast district, where wide areas have been swept. GTeut damage was done at Cowra, the fires being the worst on record. A thousand bag!,' of wheat, hundreds of acres of standing corn, vast tracts of grass and miles of fencing were destroyed. Largo numbers of stock perished. Many settlers lost their homes. The damage is estimated at £IOO,OOO. Some sensational escapes of firefighters are recorded, settlers being driven to take refuge in creeks and dams. Rabbits largely helped to spread the flames through their fur catching afire and their rushing madly amdngst the standing crops.
