Mr. Clark Allan, for some years in the Railway Department, djed at Palmerstou North on Friday, aged 59 years. Mr. G. L. Cook, formerly engineer in charge of the Stratford-Ongaruc railwav construction works, has returned from a holiday visit to the Old Country, and is at present in Stratford.—Post. Mrs. J. Tucker, of Carterton, and for many years a resident of Masterlon, has received word that she has been left £15,000 by a relative in America.
The Honsr li. H. J. Reeves, W. ('. Smith and G. Jones, whose seven years' term as members of the Legislative Council expires to-day (Monday), have been re-appointed for another term.

News received in Sydney from London states that there is no hope of the recovery of Sir Frederick Darley, who 'was Chief Justice of New South Wales in 1880, and Lieutenant-Governor in 1001.

A Press Association wire from \i',inganui states that William Hodgson Baiiiicoat, Wnnganui's scniur lawvr. passed away unexpectedly on Satur'div afternoon. He was 50 years of age, and came to Wanganui tl'iirtv years ago. becoming a partner in the firm of Borlase and Barnieoat.
In legal circles some speculation is be. ing indulged in regarding the judiciary. There is a possibility of Mr. .lustre Denniston retiring shortly, and of M,-. Justice Sim taking his place. Another rumor is that the Chief Justice (S : r Robert Stout) will retire, and that I i.> Attorney-General (Hon. Dr. Findla?) will lake his place.

Ph.D., of Knox Church Invercargill, has just received an invitation from the (Hebe Church, .Sydney, to proceed to Sydney and preacli as a candidate for the pulpit of that church, which is vacant sis a result of the appointment of the minister (Dr. Houston) to the position of Professor of Church History in St. Andrew's College, Mr. Edward Saunders, of the stall' ol the li.vltelton Times, who went to England to assist Lieutenant (now Sir Ernest) Shackleton in the compilation of his hook on his recent expedition to the South Pole, arrived hack in Wellington by the Marama on Wednesday. Mr. SaunuViv says that Captain Scott, who is organising another South Polar expedition for next year, will probably be accompanied by some of the members of the <'iiickli'ton exnedition.
Mr. I.',i .Inn t'hao (the first Chinese Consul-Genera.' for the German Dependencies in the South Pacific), attended by his English secretary (Mr. Lam Clink Kwan) and his Chinese secretary (Mr. Tsin Tso Hon), reached Sydney last week by the Chaiigsha on his way t'o Samoa, the headquarters of the new Consulate. Mi'- Lin is among the foremost of the advanced type of young men in the Chinese Empire. He passed through the Tientsin University, where he studied under Professor Eiimcs, of Oxford. At Tientsin Mr. Lin chose law, and became perfect in the Chinese degrees. For several years after leaving the Chinese academy he occupied various responsible posts under Imperial appointment, and Inst year was dispatched to Samoa as a Commissioner to inquire into the alleged ill-treatment of the Chinese coolies by the representatives of the Herman planters. Upon his return to China, after making investigations in the Pacific, Mr. Lin was 1 appointed assistant secretory to the Viceroy of Canton.
