TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Christchurch Racing Club's sunnier meeting opens to-day. Salute is a firm favorite for the Air;kland Railway Handicap. The Wanganui Trotting Club's summer meeting takes place on Thurs.Uy and Saturday next. A number of Tavanaki trotters are engaged at the gathering. Roosevelt left Wanganui for Auckland on Thursday. Better luck may accompany him at Ellcrslic than when he finished second to lady Lucy in the N.Z. Cup last month. The Porirua mentor, Mr. J. Pross'r, has nominated a horse for each event at the Rangitikei Cup meeting. Sixteen entries from one man sounds well.

Another X.Z.-bred huise in Idyll (Multiform—Bellicent). wno fetched a big price at the Yaldhurst sale, won a race at the same meeting. The Palmersto'n-trained Celaeno cost punters a trifle in the Maiden at Woodville. The bearer' of the "Higliden" jacket was sent out a good favorite and showed up prominently for three furlongs, then faded out of the contest. This cannot be her true form, as in re-

cent races Celaeno has always finished strongly and has run six iuriongs right I out in determined style. Wanganui punters went for Chiso' Mab in the Welter, and the hurdle home j put up a good fight, beating Rangikura, I Polynies and a good crowd in a hot; contest for second money. The boomed Advance mare, Singer,' carried most boodle and won comfortably. Te Puia is proving a good stake-win- : ned lor Dick Bro'ugh. A double at Dannevirke was a good start for the season, alid on the strength of that 1 In 1 daughter of San I"ran was most punted cn for the Grandstand Handicap on Wednesday. J. Moloch ran sufficiently well at Opnki to suggest a win shortly, and the Woudville Handicap came his way on Wednesday. 111 running the ten furlongs in 2min Bsec., the Mauser gelding must have been very well. R. Hatch was o.'i the winner and he had his work cut out to land his mount first home bv a bare neck from Paisano. who linis'h.'d fast up the straight. Provocation is said to he an unlikely starter in the Great Northern Derby and probably shorter events at Awapuili will be Ms mission at Christmas time.

Carbine finished up in eighth place amongst winning English sires, eignt winners of sixteen races aggregating £10,156 15s for "Old Jack." Silkweb must be accounted one of the most consistent sprinters running down South. The Soult gelding is now aged, but over short courses can foot 't smartly. He will "be given a run at tl:e Cliristchurch meeting. Horses owned by his Majesty King Edward had won nearly twenty thousand pounds in stakes this season wli.'n the last mail ieft Fogland Grand Slam has been threatening 11 win a race for a long time now, amAviil take on easier company at the Chrittchurch meeting than he has been dialing in big cups recently.
