PICTON REGATTA. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last flight. A Picton telegram states that;the date of the championship regatta in definitely fixed for Monday, January ,24th. Over one hundred men are to be put on the Arthur'rPass tunnel works after the endjofthe jtesent year. TOBACCONISTS' ASSOCIATION. Christchurch, Last Might. A Tobacconists' Association has been formed here, and at the initial meeting a resolution affirming the desirability for tobacconists being licensed was arrived at. It was also decided to communicate with other centres' of the dominion where there ia no similar association in existence urging the formation thereof. 'A DEMAND RESISTED. • > • Wellington, Last Night. • The City Council held a special meet-| ing to consider the demand fxm the Hospital Board for £5488 as the Council's share (amounting to efghty-eight one hundredths) of the cost of erecting the infectious diseases hospital, tenders for which have been closed. The Mayor protested that the new hospital was too extravagant, and the demand on the Council was more than it could afford to pay.. It was resolved to refuse to pay. The committee will consult with the hospital trustees,

Wellington, December 10. j Trouble i* beinz experienced at the! Wellington dock works owing to the concrete bottom not settling properly. The depth of water is some forty feet, and this appears to affect the hardening process. The Harbor Board has procured a report from engineers and scientific authorities as to the best way of overcoming the difficulty, but no details are published yet. It is reported in oae paper that the work had to be stopped. This is denied in another paper.
