Edward Hackett, an old resident of Wan'ganui, and at one time n well-known oarsman, was drowned in the river at midnight on Thursday. He had been working at the Parapara, and when coming home called at the honse of Mr. Fred Allan, on the river bank, in order to borrow a .boat to cross' the river, and so save a walk of two and a half miles, He procured the boat, and shortly afterwards Mr. Allan heard a cry for help.
