fOXTON KOPEWORKS DESTROYED. By Telegraj h.—Preai Association. Palmcvston, N., Monday. Ross and Co.'a ropeworks at Eoxton were totally destroyed by lire on Sutur- i lay. The works were closed down at ■ the usual time, but an hour and a-haif later a passer-by noticed llnniea issuing through one of the windows a L the opposite end of t'lie 'building from the machinery. Ju a few minutes the building was completely enveloped in flames and a little later the roof collapsed. Within haif-au-hotii of the outbreak, Ilk; whole building was totally destroyed, together with machinery valued at £IB,OOO, which was used in the manufacture of all classes of rope and twine. The value of the property saved does not exceed £SOO. The lire will throw 70 hands out of work for a long period, owing to "J.e fact that it will be necessary to import new machinery from Englaud. Fortunately the direction of the wul and the work of a bucket brigade resulted in the offices and a row of wotkmen's cottages being saved. The insurances total £7OOO.
