AMUSEMENTS.

" OUR. BOYS/' A SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE. The Theatre Royal held a big crowd last evening, the occasion being the first production by the New Plymouth' Amateurs of Byron's three-act comedy "Our Boys:' Only once or twice in a generation do we get a successful play, by that we mean a play that lives. There ar?, of course, pieces that run for two, [ three, or even four hundred nights, and I then i>ass into obscurity. There are | others that become classics by reason ot their literary beauties. -Our Boys' is I not of these. It makes no pretence to greatness; it Iras' no "purple" messages, and expresses no tempestuous passions. It is just a quiet, simple, everyday story such as happening somewhere to somebody all the time. Jt has held its' ow.i from tin- first day it was played, limngli its long four-years London run, anil in «very city in the English-speak-ing world, ucoaiwe it never rises above the intelligence of any of us, and is brimful of quaint humor, homely fun, dommfic pathos and human nature. The exigencies of our space this morning 1111fortunatelv prevents an adequate notice |of the plot of the story, and of the splendid manner in which it was told by our talented local amateurs, being given, and the extended report is accordingly held over till to-morrow. The cast, as we have indicated, was particularly well .sustained, and the audience was most warmly appreciative. The presentation of the comedy was distinctly above amateur average, and last night's success should be repeated to ''standing roeui only" to-night.
