THE SURTAX ON TOBACCO.
DEPUTATION TO THK PKIuuEK. By Telegraj h.—Press Association. Wellington, November 30. A deputation representing the tobac conists of New Zealand waited on the Premier to-day to protest against ' 'to imposition of the ± x /-> jum - vent, surtax on tobacco. It was pointed out that the surtax uiuM come out of the pockets of the as they could not hand it on to the public, and that retailers lose something like |.i!14,000. Tin- extra tax would mean I'l-'Jud per Hi on tobacco and In] per 100 oi cigarettes. It was stated that tobacconists would prefer taxation in tne form of a license, as a license would be some protection against Chinese and groecrs who sold tobacco simply as a side line. The Premier said he would take the suggestion into consideration, and assured the deputation that the whole matter would receive fair coTiisideration and be dealt with probably before Christmas.
