OVERRIDING AN AWARD.

EMPLOYERS' PROTEST. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The following resolution was passed by the executive committee of the Canterbury Employers' Association at a meeting held on Monday night:—"This executive protests most strongly against the proposals contained in the Shops and Offices Amendment Uili wherein it iti intended to over-ride the awards given by the Court ol Arbitration. Alter heifing full evidence from each side, this executive considers that such proposals are a reflection on the Court, as they imply that the Court is not competent to do the work for which it was specially established. This executive further thinks that if Parliament considers the Court incompetent to do its work the Court should be abolished." A DUXKDIN PROTEST. Dunedin, Last Might. At a meeting of the Otago Employers' Association today, a resolution to the following eil'ect was carried:—"i'hat this Association strongly protests against the action 'of tile Government in continually over-riding the decisions of the Arbitration Court and looks upon its action in connection with the proposed Shops and Offices liill as unwarranted interference with tile-Arbitration Court. In this instance the Court Ims sat in every part of the Dominion aou heard evidence in respect to hours, wages and conditions of work ill connection with hotel employees, and in many instances it has' increased wages and shortened hours. The Government now without evidence proposes to reduce tlie hours still further, and at the same rate of pay as fixed by the Arbitration Court, thus upsetting the whole basis oi the award. The meeting pledges itseli to stand by the New Zealand Employers' 1 PeuWation in any siand it may see lit to take up in demanding that decisions of the Court shall be respected by the Legislature."
