THE ATHENIC'S IMMIGRANTS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Athenic, which arrived from London to-night, brought 587 passengers. Thirty-seven of the men are farmers. METHODIST SYNOD. Gore, Last Night. The annual Synod of the Otago aud Southland district, held here to-day, was attended by over 50 ministers and laviuf Rev."P. W. Farclough, presiding. It was reported that 35 Maoris were trained nt tile Maori College at Auckland during the year and that eleven -tudents were trained at the Theological institute. The Conference Committee's recommendation regarding the instituting of a lay pasturate was affirmed. The f'vnod expressed surprise at the state- -, -'nt recently made that Maoris at Rnapuke were visited only by Anglican clergymen, as the Rev. Papakura (M"thOdist) las visited there for nine years.
