REGULATING MOTOR TRAFFIC
DEPUTATION TO A MINISTER. By Tciegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A deputation from the Makara County Council to-day asked the Minister of Internal Affairs for legislation to -c----lieve the people of the district from ' the terrorism they have to endu.-e troni th,. furious driving of some motor ears and the reckless riding of many motor cyclists."
Mr. Budilo promised to lay the matter Wore his colleagues, but made it plain hat for himself ho was entirely opposed o the Government taking over the eontrol of motor traffic. Local authorities had practically unlimited powers in mnfc. ing and enforcing by-laws to deal with Ihe difficulty, for they would not lie disallowed by the Government unless they contained something distinctly contrary to law. There was nothing at all to prevent any county council making bylaws ami dealing with the whole difficulty itself. To adopt the present, proposal would mean taking from the local bodies a very unpopular duty and layinit upon the Government. That he could not approve of at all. There would also be very many difficulties in the way of w™id'? ter,,W tho « enPnil would be necessary. ■
