THE NORTHERN SECTION. By Telegmon.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The Hon. T. Mackenzie on Saturday drove the first pile of the Waiau bridge in the presence of a large number of settlers from the districts interested, includliig representatives from Marlborough and Christchurch. In his speech ®e stated it was intended to continue •the Waipara-Cheviot line to the bridge. He was waited upon later at MeKenzie •(Cheviot) by a large_and representative deputation which urged npon him the necessity fo r the South Island Main TranS bSiij completed, and the Minister undertook to place their representations before Cabinet. In the evening he wag entertained at a banquet bv the South Island Main Trunk Railway I League.
