The Daily News FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 26. FIXING SHOW DATES.
Wliiii appeals io us as a very sensible |, suggestion was made by a prominent v oihcial of Uic Tarauaki Agricultural So- i fitly tu a member of our stall' recently, ,| viz., Iliai the Society should consider y ttli! wisdom of holding Ihe show Inter in [ the season, rebruary for prefei'cneo. W'c are not quite prepared Io oiler a le- , finite opinion on the question, but there j line, eeriaiuly possibilities in it Ihat will , warrant its thorough consideration. At , present the Tarauaki Show in held at the fug-end of the spring show eireuit, , after exhibitors anil exhibits have iiejn , practically continuously on Hie road for ' over a month. It 13' well-known lliu niaiiy who would otherwise willingiv forward entries decline to do *o oil the grounds citlter that they themselves cannot afford to lose any 'more time.. 01 that their stock has gone nil' utvinj; to the trying railway travelling 10 which they are subjected. This i* « circumstance also to he taken into account, that the Turuntiki lixture is almost clashing with Auckland; at any rati', following it so closely that it is iilinont impossible for slock to he exhibited at both shows. Owing to the close proximity- of these chows neither of them can secure representation of Hie principal travelling exhibitors' to the extent they would were there a reasonable interval between them. Another factor to be considered is the clashing of the show date with Waitura's annual racing fixture— 11 eircuniKtnncp that apparently could not be avoided this year. t'nf >rtuua.te.ly the arranging of the dates for these fixtures is largely one over which they cannot exercise much control—tile showing have to fake its only available place in the circuit, and the liacing Club being more or less in the hands of the Kaciug Conference. It will be generally conceded also that the present is 11 most inconvenient time for the farming community even to attend the show. Til. l milking season is now almost in full Hush, entailing obligations on even dairy farm worker that cannot be ;ui'i aside. So far as the convenience of t!i.'l farming community is concerned, therefore, there is not the slightest doubt I that they would appreciate the show j far more thoroughly were it held at a time when the exigencies of farming I were not so exacting. Just to what exj tent the exhibitors would lie affected litthe suggested change of date we are not in a position to confidently state, although we have the opinion of some level-headed breeders that stud stork could be shown in as good condition in February a* al the present time. As stated, however, iwe are not sufficiently versed in the science of farming fo'r show purposes to say whether or not such is the ease, but the subject appeirs to us to be worthy of consideration Indie Society. It should not he a difficult matter to get the opinion of the principal exhibitors on its feasibility, S;r that, we are almost certain, is the only question that need cause any concern as to the propriety of making' the change. Shows are at present held in the Wairarapa about February and March, and probably a summer circuit, commencing at New Plymouth, could be arranged without much difficulty. At any ra ->. we commend the suggestion to the Tar.inaki Society's notice, and trust an expression of members' opinions .will 1 e obtained regarding its merits.
