A deputation from the Wellington Education Board waited on the Minister for Education to-day and urged the continuance of the week-end free passes to tir.ciers. The Minister said the Education Department wie now paying the Railway Department about £IB,OOO a ■ year for passes to students and teachers. The Department had frequent evidence of the abuse of the system and felt the - boards as a whole had not supported the Department by careful supervision. The action taken was largely intended to tut. off that part of the system of free £ asses in which abuses took place, the ope being that after public attention bad been called to it some letter system Could be substituted. What the Depart •tnenfc wanted was to secure that tcach- * erg getting free passes should atteid r classes, which would increase their eflit- ciency. As long as that was done fhe , - Department would interpret the ter.ns 1 fit the circular as liberally as possible.
