Gore, Friday. Henry Matthews, aged 32, a married , man with two children, engaged on the day shift at Green's lignite pit. did not , return home last evening. His wife lie- , came alarmed ami communicated with the mine manager, who with his son made haste to the mine, where an inspection revealed .Matthews' body almost covered with four or five tons of lignite. The coal was broken up, and on getting the body clear it was found that ilrwas' extinct. It is supposed that lnceased lired a shot, which was heard about four o'clock, ami as it failed to bring down the coal he commenced to hew it out, with the result that the j loosened coal fell on him. A STEWARD'S DEATH. Westport, Last Night. At 10.30 a.m. to-day the chief steward of the s.s. Whangape, Archibald McCullum, was found by the assistant, Joseph Cullen, in his bunk in an unconscious state with a bottle of spirits of chloroform and laudanum on his table. Medical aid was summoned and artificial respiration resorted to, and emetiee administered, but without avail. Deceased was a native of Glasgow, 45 years of age, married, with a home in Dunedin. He left a letter to the captain, stating he had been a fool Fd himself, and ask> ing him to forward his effects to his wife at Dunedm. At the inquest, the evidence went to show deceased had since the arrival of the steamer in Westport, been drinking, and on one occasion been admonished by the captain. The verdict of the coroner was that death was due to an overdose of laudan. urn self-administered.
