RETRENCHMENT.
THE GOVERNMENT WORKSHOPS. By Tclegrapn.—i'ress Association. CiirisU'liurch, Last Nignt. At a general meeting of the Canterbury brauch of the Amalgamated Society ol Railway Servants, held on Wednesday, the following resolution was carried:—"lliis meeting regrets tint artisans and others arc being dismissed from the Government workshops, thereby causing a large amount of valuable machinery to lie practically idle, while at the same time work which wouid employ both said machinery and employees whose services have been dispensed with has been let to private iirnis. The meeting considers members of Parliament for Canterbury should urge upon the Government the necessity in putting work in hand which would provide employment for those being discharged."
