Prior to the commencement of business at the Inglewood Magistrate's Court on Monday, Mr. H. J. M. Thomson, on behalf of the local bar, extended a welcome to Mr. Kendrick, and expressed the hope that he would find the work of this district not uncongenial. 1 Mr. Thomson said the time was ripe for the establishment of two sittings each ; mouth, instead of one, as at present, as ; the work became very congested at times 1 and dill'icuit to conduct. There was also 1 a great deal of annoyance suffered by 1 the long time it tool; to get even the I smallest cases attended to, and if his Worship could see his way to give an additional sitting in each month it would be a very great boon to everyone. Mr. Kendrick said lie thought it possible that the congestion of work just now might be llic result of the unfortunate changes which had been rendered necessary owing to causes which no one could control. He had only three days in the month at liberty, and in it he evrat of any sitting occuping an extra day, against which it was not always possible to guard, he would not even have those, lfc would, however, see how the work could be overtaken, and if it appeared to him to be necessary lie would endeavor to arrange for . another sitting each month.

itcports are again current in London financial circles of u great Scotch whisky combine. The first report, although denied, mentioned three firms. .Now a Scottish correspondent to the Financial News definitely mentions that the firms concerned are John Dewar, dames Buchanan, John Walker, Andrew Usher, and John (Irabbie. The first-named are known as "the Big Three." and their profits, with those of Usher's, are in normal times .000,01)0 per annum each. As a matter of fact, last year Dewar's profit was' over £10(1,(100. The linns mentioned •are heavily interested in the cxpoit trade, and it is largely with a view to the development of tins side of their business that the combine has been mooted. For several years the whisky industry has been passing through severe depression, which lias not, however, atl'ectcd the "Big Three" to any great extent. The one bright spot was the export branch. It is recognised that the shipping trade, especially to Englishspeaking countries, holds out vast possibilities. It is believed that on the settlement of the llritish Budget oiie. way or another, the suggested combination will show out more plainly than" Is' at present apparent. Tho subject is one possessing much interest for local importers at the moment, as mnv he under- J stood, when it is shown that New Zo.i I land is fifth on the list of consumers.
