; -UNLUCKY JAMAICA. ' TEN INCHES ~OF RAIN DAILY. SEVERAL TOWNS IN RUINS. NUMBER OF PEOPLE DROWNED. DAMAGE ASSESSED AT A MILLION POUNDS. By Cable.—Press Received November 14. 5 p.m. London, November 13. A hurricane swept Jamaica. The rainfall averaged ten inches daily. Landslides caused considerable havoc to plantations. The damage to the capital (Kingston) and neighborhood is estimated at £50,000. A number of persons were drowned. The islands of Hayti and San Domingo were devastated by .the flood. Several small towns are in ruins.
Many lives were lost in Hayti, which was also damaged by earthquake. A Kingston cablegram assesses the damage in Jamaica at a million pounds. The Kingston waterworks were destroyed anil railways ami tunnels blocked owing to laiiilsli.h-. Several bridges were destroyed, One-third of the banana plantations on the northern side of the island Ki'iv ruined, the roads being impassable. Many villages are isolated. The town on Annol Bay was Hooded .for three feet. It is estimated the Government's Calamities Fund of £IOO,OOO sterling I will .be exhausted in repairing the bridges, roads, and -railway.
