TURF TOPICS. |'i (By "Moturoa.") ' One of the young season's most con- i sistent perlormei-B ihas been the Palm.r- \-, slon-trained Aberbrotlioek, and it goesj' without saying that the colt's own.-r, . .Mr. D. Buic'k, Ml'., came in for a hearty round of congratulation when the lurr-year-old gathered in the well-endowed Metropolitan Handicap a't Riccarlo i on Monday. Aberbrotlioek opened the season by winning the Iloiowhenua Cvp from start to liiiish, the beaten horses I including AH Red and Sir Frisco. At Xrentliaui recently witili the going all against him, lie gave that mudlark Morrie Zealand a merry "go" the chief handicap on the isecoud day. A by'' j was withdrawn from the New Zeaia-i.d | Cup in favour of his slablenule 'J.'iigimoaiia, an unfortunate happe.ui.ig as ). turned out, Taiigiiuoana goi.ii lame shortly afterwards. Southern wi.icis express Uic opinion that Lady I.'.ivy "as | probably fortunate in not having to ] meet Aberbroliliock in the New Zealand Cup, the Palmerston horse being a splendid stayer. There was no doubt . about the way he beat All Red, Roose- , veldt and Co.' in the Metropolitan Handicap, and he promises to turn out one lof our best handicap horsen'. Mr, D. i! I'.iiick secured a bargain when he bought I i!,e coll together with his dam for the I small'outlay of SO guineas at a Paliner- ! ston sale.
Wucn the editor of a religious pa/'." sets out to air his ignorance on Turf doings, he usually pictures the odds merchant as the synonym for iniquity and the punter bolil is classed amongst the sheep—variety lainbs. His knowledge of horse-racing was probably picked up at a. lilaml 'Oil melodrama, and in eonsei|UiMic( —to <|tiole an article before me now—his advice runs like this:—"lf by any chance you hear a bookie shout out. to a companion on the course Unit a certain horse is "buzzing" and that the "stable is out for blood," you may lake it for "rained that he knows that the i'i|iiine competitor is to will if it can." Hi course Ihe wily bookmaker "shouts" Hie information, and you must not be taken in bv his carefully coiiceaied slangy tips. ' The. fact that Hie stable : s ■out for blood" docs not mean Mat you should hasten oil' for a. doctor. Be guided by the marvellous tip from this ! (rem. and keep your oars pricked lor the bookie's "shout'' at Waitara next month. The editor next explains that, "A man who bucks a winner and forgets to claim his, winnings fe' dcnnminlaled a "sleeper" or a "sleeping mug." I This is enough to cause any sportsman .joy. He careful lest you join the ranks of "sleeping mugs.'' Uring your little sister willi' you to look after you i'f necessary—you cannot be too careful! And then this journalistic satellite put on his most inspired air and wrote these linal words of warning:—"People who visit racecourses should beware of the "lumberer." Dressed as a gentleman and speaking as one, he asks an "innocent." fur a pencil, villi which lie figures in a notebook. Returning it to the owner he say-'. "I have an absolutely safe investment -a horse Unit is hardly known.'' lie divulges tlif name of the animal, and proposes to add lo his kindness by getting the straHirer's money "on" for hrm. Sine times o-.it of ten the latter avails himself of ilir former's offer, onlv to liiul laier Hi.il the " K ood thing" is disi gracefully beaten and Hint the "lumber- | er" has vanished. The rogue, of course. i puts' the nioni'V in his own pocket.'" And that's .how it'is done!
With the close of the Canterbury and Auckland Spring meetings attention will now he turned to the Christmas gatherings, and, as usual, horse-owners in all parts of the IJuniiniotrwill be well catered for. The Taraitaki Joekey Club, hliosc. go-ahoail policy has been a pleasing feat ore during recent seasons, is again to the fore with a 'liberal programme for the Christinas meeting, looses in open ranks mill in hack coinpiny —botli on the Hat and over sticks, being offered tempting stakes. The chili has recently effected great improvements in tins course and grounds, the new stands being a feature of the additions, and it seems' likely that the popular Xnias gathering will be as well supported by owners and the sporting public this season as iu former years. Tile programme for the meeting is now advertised and owners and trainers should note that nominations are due on Friday, November 2litli, at II .p.iu. The handicaps will be framed by Mr. George Morse, who* adjustments lind favour always.
