-Mr. Foster Frascr told the gathering that welcomed him to Auckland that lie had been struck with the enormous energy of our pioneers. He nail seen some of the liushland and compared ii. with that which was under cultivation, and he had only to see this and note the difference lo understand the tremendous energy that must have been expended to bring about tills change and get the land ready for cultivation. "Hut, he s.ud, "what I want to knowis: Is the energy going to continue? I go through the country, and everywhere 1 go, in every little town, 1 sec a racecourse, and in not a single instance in the whole of the Xorth Island have I seen an agricultural college. I have nothing to say against horse-rac-ing, hut that is not the thing that will develop this country. Xew Zealand l-i not. going to continue to be the great country she is by having only racecourses." There was one thing, however, which Mr. F'oster laid stress upon in regard to the development of this country, and that was that the great work which had been done in Xew- Zealand would never have been done liy any other men than those of the Hrit.isn stock. (Applause). "It is because I have travelled so much and seen such a lot of the British Empire." he continued,
"and have studied the various conditions prevailing that my political opinion; are what they are. (Applause). 1! am not coming out as a Unionist," lie added, alluding to his candidature at Home. ''l am going in as a Unionist.'' (Applause), lie thought lint it would !»' well if all members of I'arliMi.iiit. before being allowed to lake their seals, and, in fact, before they were allowed to become candidates, should be forced t.o make a tour of the British Empire. (Applause.)
