Air. A. K. S.vkes was a passenger by Uie Rarawa to'Onehunga on .Monday. A London cable reports tile ileulll of Mr. Lionel Hrough, the well known actor. The condition of Mr. I'red Stolir, who lias been ill for a long time, is causing I,'; relatives and friends much anxiety. A Dunedin wire states that Mr. lieorge Femviek has resigned the editorship of the Otago Daily Times, lie will lie succeeded by Mr. Hutchison, of Invercargill Dr. Carbery, of Stratford, purposes visiting the Old Country next year, and will probably leave aliout February next. There is a likelihood that he will be i.way fo r a couple of years. His Excellency the Governor gave « dinner at Wellington last night in honor of the King's liirthdny. The invited guests included t'he Prime Minister (lit. Hon. Sir Joseph Ward), Minister ot Internal Affairs (Hon. D. Buddo), Mr. .Tustice Cooper, the Mayor of Wellington (Dr. Newman), and various foreign Con-suls.—-Press wive.
At the last meeting of the Ilaweva County Council Mr. J. C. Montefiore tendered Ilis resignation an comity foreman, Mr. Montefiore, in a letter to Hie Council, pointed out that he had been unable to dispose of his contracting plant when he joined the stall', and lie could not for a further period allow the plant to "c----main idle. He was therefore compelled to take up contracting again. The Coun. cil passed a motion accepting Mr. Monteliorc's resignation 'with regret. Eule i gistic reference was also made to his excellent work while in tile Council's employ.
