TARATA BRIDGE.

The Taranaki County Council wrote a letter, read at tlie Clifton County Council meeting on Friday, which eon tained a record of the resolution of the Council oa old limber from the Tarata bridge. It was as follows; "That this Council is .surprised to learn that tin; Clifton County Council should remove timber fruiu the Tarata bridge after having received a letter from this Council requesting that the limber should be put up for .sale by public auction." The Engineer, in the cour.-e of /is explanation, said: '.My proposals ror using the timber were reported upon ami agreed to three months before the actual work was put iu hand, and discussed more than once in the interval without any objections being raised. That my proposal to completely renew the Tarata decking in place uf continued odd repairs by inexperienced men was sound. That with a view of studying economy, Die old timber wa* to be used in the bye-road bridges. Thai the resolution (as above) is incorrect in fact, and the surprise should be with this Council, inasmuch as Umber was removed and partially in place in the bye-road bridge before the letter was received, not after that event. That this Council's actions were, in -ny opinion, consonant with the assumption that the full control of the bridge was' in this Council's bands. That more timber than the Taranaki Council's portion is now awaiting their convenience on the ground, and of a quality similar to that used by this Council. That discourtesy has been officially and continually denied, and wfts never given or intended." C'r. McKenzic thought the Taranaki County were making too much of a "meal" off his little affair. They vuo going altogether too far. •Cr. Hunter moved that the letter be received. The Council were convinced their engineer had done nothing \vr «ng. The motion was carried.—Mail.
