THE KING'S BIRTHDAY.

HOLIDAY ARRANGEMENTS. The celebration of tlie birthday of His Majesty King Edward to-morrow involves a whole round of festivities. Locally, the New Plymouth Horticultural Society's rose show takes pride of place as being the first arranged daylight fixture. The show i 6 to be held in St. Mary's Hall, and, as the result of the extension of time for receiving entries, until five o'clock this evening, a splendid exhibition is assured, many ad ditional growers having decided to place their blooms in the various competitions. Decorative classes promise well. Apart from fhe nursery exhibitions there will be several well-known local gardeners there with collections of flowers otlier than roses, one lady alone showing a hundred different varieties. There is a nurserymen's competition for the best collection of named varieties of roses, and this is one of the chief attractions. The show is to be open both afternoon and evening. The Recreation Sports Ground Committee has a sports meeting on their ground, held in conjunction with the Amateur Athletic Club, whose members make their first appearance under the club rules. Most of the "cracks" of the district have beeij reinstated as amateurs, so there should be some interesting races to watch. Apart from this there are cycling and novelty events, including the great "dash for the Pole." Patrons of the "sport of kings" will be catered for by tie WaverleyWaitotara Racing Club's annual fixture, lor which there are some large fields. The meeting grows in popularity each year. At nigM we have the Fire Brigade's plain "id fancy dress ball for adults, for wh! :■ ■ usual complete arrangements have been made. The Ngaire gardens will be the Scene of a picnic during the afternoon.
