ARMY MEAT CONTRACTS.
SOUTH AFRICAN COMPANY'S fir,AIM By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright London, November 5 The trial has commenced on a petition of light from the Imperiui Cold Storige' Company, claiming £280,000 damages fram the Crown for breach of contracts. It is claimed that the War Office representatives promised to supply the '.oirpany with all stock captured by Lord Kitchener during the Boer War at 1 a penny below the price of the contract for supplying meat to the army, whereas the War Office charged threepence abovo the contract price, and refused to allow for disease or the poverty of the animals. According to some witnesses, Lord KUchener declared that the old contractor.- defrauded th c War Office of a million sterling, and that he was not satisfied till he could get some of it back from the suppliants. An important question is involved at to whether the agreements were under Dutch or English law.
