Ui'ir Dernberg (Minister for the Colonies in the German Ministry), speaking as the guest of the African Society in London, said the impressions uppermost in his mind after visiting South Africa verc the great work done by Englishmen, especially the late Cecil Rliodeß, and the spirit" of mutual understanding ivnd conciliation that had just accomplished the unification of a nation under tiie British flag. Colonel Rcely (Under-Secretary for tho Colonies), in a subsequent speech, frankly remarked that tlic union of South Africa would hove been impossible withrut the help and co-operation of the Government's political opponents.
