CRICKET.

Aa yet no fixtures have been drawn for the schools' Saturday competitions. Mr. Dempsey, the headmaster at the Central school, is taking ail active interest in the .matter, and doubtless the competitions will be in full swing' sorni. Messrs. Bocock and Sullivan arc coaching the Central boys, who arc doing good \\oik. At West .End the Juds are receiving tuition at the huuds of some members of adult clubs', One of these honorary coaches states that the two Crones, Newell, Hooker and Sheppard are lads of excellent promise. The Crone boys, by the way, are members of the United Service A team as school representatives.

It is pleasing to learn that cricketers are taking an interest in the bovs' school cricket. This is' absolutely the soundest method of ensuring the future of the game in the district. At present many young men take up cricket, not because of any liking for the 'game, but simply because they have nothing better to do. The proper way to make sure of men taking up the game and making a decent showing at it is to have them taught in their young days. As erieket isn't in the school curriculum —although it might be better than some of the fad subjects taught—it is' "up to" the cricketing fraternity to lake turn about in teaching the young idea how to bat. ' °

The United Service A started its practises last, night. The team has some promising players. IfcXatty, besides shaping well with the bat, 'is a fair bowler, keeping a 'good length and delivering a ball that is none too easy to score oft'. Sullivan, Eea, Stichbury,' and Robinson are promising "colts'." The Recreation Sports Ground presents a busy spectacle each evening now. several teams putting in regular practise.
