Mutton.—The market is very quiet; speculative buying apparently ended. Buyer* are not inclined to make forward purchases at present prices, but stocks on hand are light and firmly held in a few hands. The average price to-day is: Canterbury 4%d, North Island 4>4d. Mutton only reached the present prices on one occasion since February, 1007. The lamb market is ijuiet and dull of sale. Average price: Canterbury brands •ty 4 d, North Island 4Vi»d.
Beef. —The market is steady. The average price to-day is: New Zealand hinds 3%d, fores 3d.
Butter.—The market is lirm for best (jiiality, but the high prices restrict the demand. Buyers of butter are holding back, expecting prices to go lower. The price for choicest New Zealand butter to-day is - 117s, Argentine 1 Ids, Australian 115s, Danish 1275, and Siberian 107s.
Cheese.—The market is dull. There is only a small demand. The average price for finest New Zealand cheese to-day is stls pei" cwt. Hemp.—Market quiet but steady. New Zealand good fair, on spot, £27 10s; failgrade, ;C2O 10s; fair current Manila, on £2O. The Manila output is l 33,000 bales.
Cocksfoot seed.—Market firm. There are light stocks on hand. The average price for bright clean New Zealand cocksfoot seed weighing 171bs per bushel, on spot, is 70s. Hops—The market is firm and prices continue to advance.
Kauri gum.—Market firm, with more inquiry, The stock on hand is 302 tons. Ordinary to fair three-quart,er scraped lilts, fair half-scraped 105s, brown fair half to three-quarter scraped i)()s, brown pickings common good 42s Od. bush fair good to pale amber scraped 150.4. The River Plate shipments received during September in London were, mutton 118,583, lamb 10,210; Liverpool, 208,175 and 5050; Hull, 0950 and 1000; Southampton, 7706 and 1850; Cardiff, 5335 and 500; Ireland, 1500.
