FARM AND DAIRY.
A bee-farmer in tlic Wairarapa, near Mastcrton, is said to have t lu* largest output in Australasia. Ijial year he harvested -7 tons of honey, ami expects to do- more this season. 1 A farmer of this district who has "had many years' experience on the land—in fact, has gone grey tilling the soilviews with, soiue forebodings the gradually increasing price paid for land on the Waimate Plains (says the Witness). Ac good as the soil is for grass-growing and 'the Juxuriant pastures that giu euch handsome returns, lie does not think people arc justified in paying the high figures lor land that have been prevailing. In his opinion it only means drudgery, and it is not in the best interests of the dairy industry. A fall in the price- of butter-fat to 'Jd or r»d would, he told a Witness representative, have a steadying effect on land values and do no one any ultimate harm. The demand for dairy heifers still k(ops up in the local market, in spite of a fairly large supply (says the Stratford Post). Farmers aeem to bo keener on the gooi sorts, and inferior backward stuff is quite neglected. A crossbred «old at Tuesday's sale by "Messrs. lM f t IV/os. realised C ( .) 10s, which is probably a record for this season. Indications 'point to dairy cattle being still dearer next season, as a great number of twoheifers are going out of the district. Waikato and Tauranga farmers are finding the bent result* are obtained from Taranaki-bred cattle, and have taken away quite 1500 already this spring. A special train containing 400 head passed through on Thursday, their j destination being Tauranga. The expanding prosperity and increas. ing industrial activity in Area I Brila'n ami the United States react on the world at large, and New Zealand its beginning tn come under their influence. Prices of our produce are now advancing, and as snowing the direct connection we may instance temp. The higher prices now ruling for New Zealand hemp, in the faoe of n, continued large production of' Manila fibre, is due to liie magnificent •harvests in the United States and Can<u!j. The States alone, it is estimated, reiiuired Ibis season an additional 114,000 bales of hemp for binder twine, and this in -(self was sufficient to raise values. I So far New Zealand is concerned the :uilhM»V ; very .promising f or a ] ar „ e producliop of the primary industries i c assured. The output of the dairies will be substantially greater than last season, and already it is claimed that ii;'sre outter and cheese is being produced than in the (lush of the past season. The wool clip is bound to be larger, for we hi.ve a greater number of sheep to pas* under the shears. The lambing ] ias been good, and the export of frozen meat ought to be up to- the average. A«*ri[Mltlire will contribute its quota, for" it is stated that a larger area is behig sown :n wheat. The by-products of the pastoral industry must necessarily h 1 larger, and.values seem likely to remain a* high as they are now, «nd may go higher as more people become employed in the consuming centres. The greater volume of capital that the greater prol: ct ion w'll provide us with will act and r-'i-et in a great many ways on the aetiut'. ,c people at,darge. More money I '•'ill be circulated among all classes, anil I •r.isnerity should become general.—Doi.mion, 1
