At present the ]iconic of the Dominion consume 53.0011 tolls of cane sugar pel' year at a ci-t to t'..e consumer of about a_ million lerliii" To "row that quantity it would -eiiuiri' the utilisation of 14.".,000 acres pf land. It is the idea of the prime movers in the matter to commence <n a reasonable scale and grow and manufacture for the lirsl two or three years sulMcient to 'supply one-fourth of t ie demand, nauielv, from 14.000 to 1.>,« 00 tons annually. This would require a capital of something like half-a-millio.l. and Mr. Onjenslade. the member iii question. is WPliced that, the necessary capital ciin be obtained without difficult.' in the Old Country. He suggests a bonus lo assist in the establishment nf ll'.' industrv at the rate of £20.000 for tl-.e lirsl 1(100 tons of sugar produced friim beet at each of tiirce factories, p. .(.'.">0,000 for the first 5000 tons of sugar produced hv one factory. Mr. Oreenshule believes that if Parliament made il'Cse concessions the establishment ol tile sugar beet industry in New Zealand would be assured. We are afraid Parliament, in view of other equally laudable demands, would not be prepared to go so fa>' as is desired, but it certainly would be justified in helping to establish an industry that would mean so much fc.r all sections of the community—the producer of the raw material, labor, and the consumer. Once established, the industry should become profitable to all parlies. In Germany, sugar Keet-grow-ing has assumed great proportions, and now forms one of (he chief and most profitable articles of export. England alone takes over twenty million pounds' worth of sugar annually from Germany, whose lands arc not more suitable than this Dominion's for beet-growing, and besides supplying our own wants it is possible to capture a share of llie English trade There are no small possibilities in the proposal, the materialisation of which would undoubtedly prove of advantage to tlwi Dominion. [Since the above was written the Premier has intimated that lie is prepared to introduce legislation to place the industry on a linn footing, and that Parliament would in all probability be given an opportunity of dealing with the matter this Reason. T'lie intimation will be received with general satisfaction.]
