An animated debate took place in the House of Commons on the proposal to omit clause 43 ol Hie Finance Bill on the ground tint it was an attempt to carry the Licensing Bill in the guise of a liltmice measure. It was claimed that many of the -smaller licensed houses jhould be taxed out of existence. Mr. Ast|uith, Premier, denied any viu dietivcliese, though he said the trade had been warned of the result if the Uceus iug Bill was rejected. .Mr. licriert Samuel, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, said the Govern nient had dealt with hotels ami .restaurants in a conciliatory manner.
