The director of the British Meteorological Office attended a conference in Canada to organise* the systematic collection and exchange of weather data throughout the Empire. The world will l.e divided into sections, [or which various Imperial meteorological offices are responsible. The Commonwealth bureau is considered of great importance by some, owing to tiic amount of ground it covers.
. OBSERVATORY FOR .AUSTRALIA. Received October 28, 12.5.5 a.m. Melbourne, Last Night. Earl Dudley (Governor-General) presided at an influential meeting to advocate the establishment of a solar observatory, urging the importance of the proposal. One of the main reasons in favor of (lie observatory was the geographical position of Australia, which was the moit suitably situated to All \ip the gap in the chain of observatories round the earth. The proper conduct of solar research depended upon continuous observations throughout the twenty-four hours, lie estimated the initial cost would/ lie £IO,OOO, and the annual upkeep' UliiOll. It was resolved that the establishment of a solar observatory was desirable, and that the Federal Government be strongly urged to assume responsibility for carrying it into effect.
