OBITUARY.
MR. R. L. STANFORD, ox-S.ll. News rcachedTvcw Plymouth on Saturday morning of the death at Wanganui of ,Mr. Robert Loftus Stanford, ex-Stipendiary Magistrate there, and until recently residing in that capacity here. The deceased gentleman was a native of Buckinghamshire, England, where he was torn in 183!). He \yas educated at Cheltenham College and Exeter College, Oxford, where he took the degree of B.A. In 1564, shortly after his marriage, he came out to New Zealand by the ship Chili, arriving at Dunedin. For many years he resided in Otago. For a time he was vicar of All Saint's, Dunedin. Afterwards he took up the journalistic pro fession and was editor, we believe, of the Evening Herald, now defunct. Then he became principal of Orokanui Boy-,' Co'lege. In 1883 he obtained the L.L.B. degree and commenced to practice the legal profession. In 1894 he was ap pointed Stipendiary Magistrate at Palmcrston North, and in February, 1807, he succeeded Mr. W. Stuart in the same capacity at New Plymouth, his district extending for {Tic greater portion of that time a 6 far south as Eltliam. Later, the district from Inglewood southwards was handed over to Mr. A. Turnbull, S.M.. recently deceased. The news of Mr. Stanford's demise will cause keen Tegc-.it amongst a very wide circle of friends throughout Taranaki, wncre the deceased gentleman was well liked and respected both in his public capacity .-.nil in his private life.
