» PROPOSED COMMITTEE OF ENQUIRY. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Melbourne, October 22. The Senate adopted Mr. Pcarce'ji motion for the appointment of a Select Committee to enquire into the condition of the press cable service. Tho Minister of Customs expressed tho opinion that the Cable Association was not a newspaper; it was merely a business venture. Enquiries had utterly failed to show that any monopoly existed and that anything was being done detrimental to the interests of the public. The proposed committee, he said, was unreasonable mid unfair. Mr. Irenwith considered it would-be improper to spend public money for the purpose of enquiring into a' monopoly which was nonexistent. SELECT COMMITTEE APPOINTED. Received 22, 10.50 p.m. Melbourne, October 22. The Senate appointed Messrs Pearcc, Dobson, Findlcy, Givens, Guthrie. Niel.l and Pulsford a select committee to enquire into the newspaper cable service.
