In various parts of New Zealand fflf I forts are being made to acclimatise the rainbow trout. In Canterbury the fish don't seem to ''do'' very well. In South 'Taranaki the results are rather better. But what promisee to be the home of the a rainbow is the Waiwakaiho stream, near New 'Plymouth. Here the fish thrive, u As an indication of this it may be men- i tioned that of 32 landed this season hy t a local angler, 29 were of the rainbow variety, and onlv three were brown trout.' They were all cyclists. George Waters was ■ fined 5s and costs for riding at night without a light, and James Thompson, W. Coombcs and Howard Mhckay were similarly penalised for cycling on footpaths. cated upon by Mr. J. W. Boon, Justic-i, his colleague on the Bench (Mr. F. C. J. Bellringer) retiring because as a horoug'i councillor he was an interested party. In view of the many hostile criticisms recently based, on the quality of the mountain metal by local bodies in other centres, it may be .mentioned, asys the Post, tliat Mr.'E. C. Robinson, the Stratford engineer, is not quite* of the same opinion. Questioned in the subject at Wednesday's meeting of the County Council, Mr. Robinson stated that the metal supplied from the mountain for use on the East road compared favorably with any yet put on the road. Tins metal, however, he believed, sometimes varied in quality. The chairman, Cr. C, A. Marchaiit, was of opinion that much that was not not justified had been saidconcerning the poor quality of the mountain metal,
