POLAR COAL SEAMS
Cy Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Sydney, October 21.
Professor David, interviewed in reference to tlie calile, stated Unit one of the specimens was found in sandstone. Tt was obtained liy Lieut. Shackleton in the vicinity of the* previously reported coal scams, tin being examined by the (loological Department of the Sydney University it was found to contain a fragment of eoniferons wood. The cell structure was fairly well preserved, and there were distinct trace*' of medullary rays such as arc found in pine woods. It proves that the coal in the seams in 85 degrees south was partly formed wood, derived from forests of pine trees flourishing within Ilic geological degrees of the South- Pole.
