BAPTIST CONFERENCE.

CONFERENCE AT WELLINGTON. By Telegraph.—Press Association,. Wellington, Last Night. At the Baptist Union Conference the Missionary Society secretary's report on the work in India stated that a decided advance had been made, especially among the outcast natives in the Tipperah district. The missionaries and other workers received several rebuffs, though successes are noted. In the medical department much relief had been offered to the natives. Villagework and itinerary work continued unabated and litera'ture was widely distributed. Mention was made of the hearty response of the Sunday schools in the matter of contribution's to the foreign mission work. The Women's Missionary Union re ported a year of steady and progressive work.

The report of the treasurer of the New Zealand Baptist Missionary Society records receipts £2194. The "expenses incurred in India in salaries, etc., came to £1382, and in Ne w Zealand £32!>. The missionary organisers' report was submitted. Thanks are expressed to donors of 118 Christmas boxes for India and to the Union Steamship Co., which carried the goods free of charge. Rev. E. A. Kirwood and Mr. A. Hoby were re-elected missionary secretary and treasurer respectively. Rev. W. H.' Hillton (Thames) was appointed missionary organising secretary for the ensnine year. Rev. F. Hales (Inverenrgill) was elected missionary preached and Rev. W. 11. Ilinton deputy preacher. The conference passed a resolution of thanks to Rev. and Mrs. Tackle for their work in India and one of regret at the retirement of Dr. Charles North. A resolution of appreciation and God-speed was tendered Miss Gainsford, who vcturns to the missionary field, leaving on Friday next, and one of appreciation to Mrs. De Carteret, at present in India. The annual gathering of the New Zealand Baptist Missionary Socictv was held to-night. Mr. Gilbert Carson of Wanganui, presided.
