Writing regarding the fate of the miniature steamer Duco, the Oainaiu Mail urges that in the public interest there should be an independent investigation as to the condition of tin; Duco when' she left Wellington on her hazardous trip, ft is. says the Mail, too much the custom to allow such vessels to go to sea excessively loaded or with deek cargo, which hampers them if they get into trouble. If a vessel is in good trim, and fairly buoyant, unless some extraordinary mishap overtakes hc r she may be deemed safe; but, handicapped by a dead cargo and top hamper, the risk is great. Those who saw the Duco leave port will be able to say whether she was in a seaworthy condition, or nor, and, for tile sake of humanity, they should tell the whole truth. Only the utmost stringency in the administration of the law applying to seagoing vessels will prevent the imperilling of the lives of seamen who, though they may be conscious of the dangers they rim" are too manly to enter a protest against the conditions by which those dangers are incurred.
