A highly satisfactory position is disclosed in the .fifteenth annual report o> the Advances to Settlers Office which was presented to Parliament on Tuesday. . It .says that a further record lias Wen established this year in the amount uf business transacted, this applications numbering 4471, amounting to £2,050,252, as against 3183 applications, amounting 'to £1,G1t8,133, for the envious year—an increase of 12SS applications for £352,117. Tho advances actually granted during 'the year numbered 3043, amounting to £1,493,835 12s, which exceeds those of the previous year by 072, amounting to £21)0.4111 2s lid. The Board had up to 31st Mare'i, 1009, -authorised' 25,534 advances, amounting to £0,200,925. Applicants to the uunibcir of 2794 declined tie granite offered them, amounting to Cl,139,810, so that the net. advances authorised to 31st March numbered 22.740. and amounted to £8,067,115. Th e total amount of advances actually paid over during the year for both the Advances to .Settlers and Advances to Workers Departments was £1,792,019 18s. The advances outstanding total 13.110, representing 'the sum of £5,118,041 4s 4d. Of these 10,059 arc for sums n't exleecding £SOO, 2017 are for sums between £SOO and £IOOO, 802 arc for sums between £IOOO and £2OOO, .while the balance. 142. arc for sums between £2OOO and £3OOO. The average amount of the advances outstanding is £390. Tho average freehold advance is £4BO, the average leasehold advance is £232, and the average freehold and leasehold (combined I is £605. The average rural advairce is £415. and the average urban and .suburban advance is ,£348.
