FLOGGING ISLANDERS.
THE MISSION CASE. By Gable.—Press Association.—Copyrign Brisbane, October 13. The Home Secretary, in his minutes dealing with the recent flogging ease in connection with the Mapoon Missio* Station, says tlic punishment indicted was not in the circumstances unduly severe, but trusts that some method less repugnant to the opinion of what constitutes an adequate punishment for breaches of achood discipline should be 1 adopted.
The charges against the Rev. Nicholas ! Hey, superintendent of the Mapoon Aboriginal Mission, involving alleged cruelty to native*, were made by Michael Bait* wr. and were circulated in Germany last war by a sister of BalUer, and communicated officially by Bishop Latrobc, of tho Moravian Board of Missions, to the Australian Presbyterian Hoard of Missions, who control the Mapoon Settlement. Raltzer alleged that a half-caste girl, Ellen, had been unmercifully beaten with a stingaree-tail whip, for fitriking M r «. Hey. Baltzer, in his evidence before the enquiry, stated that the flogging had hecn carried out by Hey and himself, at the former's instigation. Ellen, in her evidence, admitted being flogged, and that a dinghy chain had been put round her neck after it, but with the exception of that one beating, said she had been kindly treated by the mission.
