MI XIGLTALITV AXD GAS COMPANY By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, October 8. Tlie protracted negotiations which nave taken place between the City Council anil the Wellington Gas Company relative to tin- question of gas mains in the suburbs have been broug' to finality. Uniler an agreement the Council grants leave to the Gas Company to lay mains lo Miramar anil the neighbouring boroughs under the direction of the Council's requirements, on the payment of £SO a year for twentvone years, and thereafter of £IOO a year unless the Council buys the Gas Company out of the Melrose borough. Therefore, according to the .Mayor, it maintains the principle of its control over its streets.

At a meeting of the University Council, in accordance with a request the medical faculty sent the following re commendation: —'That the teaching of public health and bacteriology, practical and theoretical, be arranged; that bofi subjects be severed from their conn-c-Oon with the present chairs of Medical •jurisprudence and Pathology and placed under a new lecturer who shall also ar: as government liaeteriologist and Public Health Officer.
