A PRISON BROKEN INTO.
A PRISONER LIBERATED. A DARING ACT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. During the night, or early this morning the Kaiapoi lock-up, near the post olliec and the police station, was broken into and a prisoner named tialhighei, whom the police had arrested on the previous evening for using obscene language, was forcibly released. The affair wag a most daring one, as there aio three residences occupied within a chain or so of the lock-up. The building is a strong brick structure, enclosed in a high galvanised iron fence, at the rear of the courthouse. It contains two cells, the doors of which are secured by iron •bars, padlocked, and the outer door w locked up in a similar manner. Constables TTolmes and Smither, who bad placed the man in the cells, were about till after midnight, and later, an.l the prison-breaking must have tak rt n place between then and 0 a.m. to-day. The rescue party, which is believed to include three or four of the prisoner's companions, removed by force the faneninge of the doors, using probably an 1 jron bar or similar instrument.
